Spruce Up The House This Summer

With the sunshine out, it can reveal more cobwebs than we thought existed in our homes. To combat this, why not try a little spruce? It doesn’t have to be as demanding or expensive as you may initially think.

A Lick Of Paint

Adding one “feature wall” with a strong colour can transform the appearance of a room. Depending on the size of your wall, you may able to get away with using the tiny pot of paint too! Fresh colours are in this season, but try to match it with your existing furniture and decor.

Feature Wall-papering

Alternatively, try floral or decorative wallpaper. Although they were used wall to wall in the 50s, selective use around the chimney breast/mantel piece is modern and contemporary. Plus, as the paper is new, it’ll help towards the feeling that the whole room has been done… with just a fraction of the effort. Or none at all, if you call on the services of a local painter-decorator!

Storage

Over time, the accumulation of “stuff” can lead us to stash it in a variety of places. Squashed onto shelves or stuffed into cupboards, the crammed and busy look can have you feeling the house is getting bogged down.

Investing in decent storage, such as a fitted wardrobe, not only provides a dedicated area for the storage of your goods, but they are beautifully designed meaning your room will be instantly enhanced.

Often, fitted furniture (tailor made to your exact measurements) can make the most of space most flat pack furniture can’t. Having it made floor to ceiling too also really utilises the available space to the max.

Accessorise

Why not use the opportunity to your advantage! Adding a rug can provide a nice focal point in a room. It can make an old tired carpet appear new, thanks to some strategic placing e.g. over regularly trodden patches, or the dog’s muddy paw prints that will not come out.

You may already have an Oriental or Persian rug. Opting for rug cleaning services, rather than a new rug it is often cheaper and can add life to tired rugs some are even able to be restored and repaired. Plus, upon completion of the cleaning, it may suit a different room thanks to the new vibrancy and cleanliness achieved.

Mirrors can transform a room, increasing light and adding the impression that the room is larger. Plus, with a nice stylish frame, it can become the main feature of a room e.g. the entrance hall.

A couple of new cushions on your sofa can be reasonably inexpensive, but just the ticket for refreshing things in your mind. Try a contrasting colour to freshen things up or what about an interesting pattern?

These are just a few ideas. There’s plenty of scope for more.
